Sigomere Physically Challenged Children Project

Sigomere Small Home for the Physically Challenged Children was established in 1996 by a Mill Hill nun with Rt. Rev Zachaeus Okoth, Bishop of Kisumu diocese and the community. The purpose of its establishment was to provide basic needs such as accommodation, food, shelter and health care for disabled people within the surrounding communities. The project was initially started at Rang’ala and it received many people with disabilities. The community at Sigomere then donated land for construction of the facility. The project has been supporting more than 200 people who are physically and mentality challenged thus enabling them to overcome their physical limitations and empower them socially and economically to become self-reliant and fully integrated members of their communities.

 

Currently the home hosts 52 children and youth of which 28 are males 24 are females. The children and the youth in the home are aged between 3-25 years. The home hosts 35 children and youth who live at the small home while 17 live at their respective homes. The home also has primary and vocational training institution which is located within and close to the centre where they get basic education and skills thus making them to be reliable members of the society. The vocational training provides skills like tailoring and carpentry mainly to those who fail to complete their schooling.
